Can Everyone Wear Diamonds?
A lot of Indians, have this question, Can Everyone Wear Diamonds ? Will Diamonds Suit and Bring Luck ? Can Diamonds bring Bad Luck ?
Let us Understand the Two Opposite Views on this Subject and decide for ourselves.
The First and Traditional View: Diamonds are among the most powerful of Natural Gems. When we meet a person for the first time, for no apparent reason We either Like them Or Dislike them. Irrespective of their attire, attitude, mannerism we may still form an opinion positive or negative. Others may form a contrary opinion ! How does one answer this. There is something triggered within our-self, which makes us Like Or Dislike. So Diamonds may Bring Luck or not depending on our compatibility with it. The same logic is applied to All Natural Gems. More so to Diamonds and (Blue) Sapphires.
The Second and the Liberal View: Most people in the West wear Diamonds by Choice. They don’t have such belief systems. Are they all unhappy? It is more psychological than real. Also in the middle Ages Diamonds were a Status symbol and the Affluent wanted the exclusivity to themselves and so they professed of the super natural powers and the bad luck that it might bring to deter the common man from buying Diamonds. Just go ahead and buy them.
Both these view are rational and appeal to the mind. One view may appeal more than the other depending on the way we are brought up.
We believe when we see the Diamonds (or any other Natural Gem for that matter), the song of the heart begins to play. For all the Gems that it so happens they will Suit you. They will Bring in Loads and Loads of Luck. For all the Gems that it does not so happen, it is okay to ignore them.
What are “Dosham in Diamonds” or Flaws in Diamonds?
What are “Dosham in Diamonds” or Flaws in Diamonds? Do They bring Bad Luck ?
There was a television serial in the recent past which projected/spoke about this. They show a live insect inside. These are theatrical creations and not possible as Diamond is Carbon frozen Forever.
There are a few websites and jewellers who claim to sell Dosham Free diamonds. But what exactly are these. Nobody Explains.
There is NO “Definition” of “Dosham” in Diamonds in the Indian Scriptures so far as we have researched. The Flaws that may be found within Diamonds are Natural Cracks, or Formational defects or Birth Marks of the Diamond. They could be just White, Black or Occasionally Red in Colour.
In the trade the Black or Red Flawed Diamonds are referred to as Diamonds with Dosham and the rest as “Dosham Free” diamonds.
A better understanding is arrived from the Scientific and Systematic Gradation of the internal Characteristics of a Diamond as guided by the GIA (The Gemological Institute of America) which is the Apex Body for Diamond Certification.
They Classified the Internal characteristics of the Diamonds as Flawless (FL), Internally Flawless (IF), Very Very Small inclusion(VVS), Very Small inclusion (VS), Small Inclusions(SI) and Inclusions (I), depending on the Nature, Size and the Location of the flaw.
The underlining in this Clarity Gradation is that these Grades are based on 10X magnification.
So if the Diamond had a minor flaw visible at 12X or 20 X or above, it would be still called as Flawless or Internally Flawless.
And so, now, how do we answer the Question ?
We at N Gopaldaas Jewellers, as retail jewellers for about 9 Decades now (Since 1929) have Sold to a lot of People, both extremely Affluent AND the not so affluent people. Though most of our clients specifically buy D – IF and/or EF-IF, there are a few who also buy much lower clarity (SI 1 and SI 2).
Out of these many years of Trade, we have seen very very Few Clients (may be one in a Thousand client) come back and tell us that probably the Diamond they Bought, gave some ill luck and they would like to return it or exchange it. 99.9% clients have been happy.
And we have also observed that from the people who have come back for return or exchange have bought the IF Grade too.
The only way to make sure if the Diamonds suites us is by owning them. One or two adverse incidents do not make the Diamond Unlucky. The positive side of the incident, may be that it saved us from a far more worse situation.
A more mature way of determining it would be to silently observe for a week or two if the mind of the individual who uses or wears the diamond has been -by and large – At Peace. If it has been upset with just one or two things then a deeper introspection would help. Then, May be the Diamond has either had a Positive or a Neutral role in one’s joy and happiness.
If the individual’s mind has been in pieces (Not at Peace) it could be an indication that the Diamond does not suite him or her They should then return it .
Hence in our Trade Wisdom, we believe that These Inclusions or their Absences have made No Definitive Impact on the Buyer or the Wearer. The Satisfaction and Joy that one goes through when we Possess it, is Far more real than an abstract concept.

Olden Days Diamonds were better. They had more Shine, Brilliance than diamonds used today. Myth or Reality
When we talk about the Beauty of a Diamond there are in fact two broad aspects to it.
- The Lustre (also called as the Brilliance). It is the amount of light reflected back to the viewer.
- The Fire – the internal reflection of Light from the Diamond.
The Lustre of a Diamond is directly proportional to the size of the Diamond and its facets. The larger the reflecting surface, greater is the reflected light seen.
The Fire of a Diamond depends on how well the facets are aligned and cut. The more the number of facets greater is the times the light is internally reflected before it comes back to the eye.
Until the mid 19th Centuries when Diamonds were traditionally Cut by hand, greater importance was given to the weight (Carat) of the Diamond that could be retained after the final cut and polish than the symmetry of cut. So the diamonds used were generally larger in size than those used today.
The advancement in Science and Technology has actually given us the ability to bring out more fire (internal reflection of LIght). The number of facets are far more than old cut diamonds.Hence the fire or the scintillating effect from a modern cut diamond is more than an old cut diamond.
The smallest Diamond used in Jewellery in the Olden Days were 3 cents (0.03 carats) . The generally used sizes were 5 cents (0.05 carats) and above. Hence the reflection surfaces were larger. In the Diamond Jewellery today there is a large usage of half to one cent (0.005 -0.01 Carats) diamonds.
So, when we talk of the Shine or Brilliance of a Diamond, it is a combination of both the Lustre and the Fire. And for this both the size AND the quality of the cut of the diamond are equally important. Hence in reality the modern day cut diamonds, aided by modern science are definitely more shining than a SAME size diamond of the Olden days.

Akshaya Tritiya
Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is a holy day for Hindus and Jains. It falls on the third Tithi (lunar day) of Bright Half (Shukla Paksha) of the pan-Indian month of Vaishakha and one of the four most important days for Hindus.[1][2] It is an auspicious day of the birthday of Lord Parasurama who is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this day Veda Vyas and Lord Ganesha began to write Mahabharata. Jains celebrate this day to commemorate Tirthankara Rishabha‘s ending of one-year fast by consuming sugarcane juice poured into his cupped hands.
In Jain and Hindu calendars, some days of the month are absent in counting and some days (tithi in lunar calendars) come extra, but Akshay tritiya is one day which is never “absent” from the lunar calendar.
The word “Akshaya” means the never diminishing in Sanskrit and the day is believed to bring good luck and success. It is believed that if you do charity on this day you will be blessed. On Akshay Tritiya,
