Astrological Gemstone
Quick Summary

An astrologer tells us which gemstone to wear based on our birth chart and planetary period, while a gemologist verifies whether that stone is genuine, natural, untreated, and worth its price. Both roles are necessary a gemologist ensures quality, and an astrologer ensures suitability. Neither can fully replace the other, yet most people buying astrological gemstones consult only one when they should be consulting both.

A customer walked into our store recently with absolute certainty about what they wanted. Their astrologer had prescribed an Emerald specifically Colombian, not Zambian. They weren’t asking a gemologist whether the stone was real, whether it had been treated, or whether it was worth its asking price. They were treating the origin as though it were a spiritual category rather than a geographical one. I’ve had this conversation many times, and each time, my response as a gemologist remains the same.

The astrologer has told you which stone to wear. That is their expertise. Now let the Gemologist help you make sure the stone in front of you is worth wearing at all.

Two distinguished disciplines

Astrology and gemology are entirely separate bodies of knowledge. They meet briefly at the moment of purchase but that is where the overlap ends. An astrologer is trained in Vedic scripture, planetary systems, and birth chart interpretation. Their question is: which planet needs strengthening, and which stone corresponds to it? It is a deeply studied, ancient discipline. One that has guided millions of people across generations. That knowledge deserves full respect. A gemologist is trained in the science of stones: mineralogy, grading, and authentication. Our questions are different: is this stone natural, has it been treated, and does its quality match its claim? These are scientific questions, answered with instruments, laboratory reports, and years of handling thousands of gems. Neither can fully do the other’s job and that is perfectly fine. They are complementary. Confusions arise only when the boundary between them is blurred.

Astrologer vs Gemologist — What’s the Difference?

The Astrologer The Gemologist
Their Training Vedic scripture, planetary systems, birth chart interpretation Gemological science — mineralogy, grading, authentication, certification
Their Question Which stone should this person wear, based on their horoscope? Is this stone natural, untreated, and of good quality?
What They Tell You Which planet needs strengthening and which stone corresponds to it Origin, clarity, treatment history, carat weight, authenticity
What Lies Outside Their Scope Whether the stone you are looking at is genuine or fairly priced Which stone is right for your horoscope or planetary period

The Colombian vs Zambian question

Back to our client. Their astrologer was absolutely right: Emerald is the stone of Mercury. If Mercury needed strengthening in their chart, prescribing an Emerald was sound, informed guidance. But whether the stone being sold to them as “Colombian” was genuinely from Colombia, whether it had been heavily treated, and whether it was worth its asking price those questions belong to a different domain entirely. They are gemological questions. And they were unanswered. From a scientific standpoint, Colombian and Zambian emeralds are both natural, genuine stones. The preference for a particular origin exists within astrological and market traditions, and it does influence pricing. But what matters most for any buyer is the quality of the individual stone: whether it is natural, minimally treated, correctly certified, and honestly priced.

A note on combined roles

There are sellers who position themselves as both who will read your chart, recommend a stone, and sell it to you in the same sitting. This is not always ill-intentioned. But it is worth pausing on. This could be done at the same store, but not by the same person. Genuine gemological expertise takes years of formal study. So does genuine astrological knowledge. When the same person recommends the stone and sells the stone, the incentives deserve scrutiny — not suspicion, but careful scrutiny. At N Gopaldaas Jewellers , we are gemologists. We do not offer astrological readings that has never been our role. However we do refer and recommend you to astrologers we know and have worked with for a long time and have found to be credible in their field. What we do, with nearly a century of experience behind us, is ensure that whatever the astrologer has prescribed, the stone you purchase is genuine, correctly graded, and worth every dirham you spend.

Before you buy any Astrological Gemstone

  1. Consult your astrologer first.
Get a clear prescription about which stone, which planet, and the recommended weight.
  2. Then consult a certified gemologist.
Take the prescription to a professional who can source and verify a natural, untreated gemstone.
  3. Be thoughtful about combined roles.
If someone claims to be both, understand how their expertise in each field was developed.
  4. Always ask for certification.
Ensure the gemstone comes with a credible laboratory certificate.
  5. Remember: origin isn’t everything.
A gemstone’s quality depends on multiple factors — not just where it comes from.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can an astrologer recommend gemstone quality or origin?

An astrologer is trained in Vedic scripture and planetary interpretation — not gemological science. They can advise which stone to wear based on your birth chart. Assessing whether a stone is natural, untreated, genuine, or fairly priced requires gemological training and laboratory equipment. These are distinct and complementary disciplines.

2. How do I know if my astrological gemstone is genuine?

Ask for a certificate from a recognised, credible gemological laboratory. The certificate will confirm whether the stone is natural or synthetic, whether it has been treated, and its geographic origin. A reputable jeweller will always provide this documentation. If they hesitate, treat that as a signal to ask more questions.

3. Does it matter whether my emerald is Colombian or Zambian for astrological purposes?

Both Colombian and Zambian emeralds are natural, genuine stones — neither is scientifically superior to the other. The preference for a specific origin exists within astrological tradition and affects market pricing, but the quality of the individual stone matters most: whether it is natural, minimally treated, and correctly certified. A high-quality Zambian emerald will outperform a poor-quality Colombian one in every practical sense.

4. Is it safe to buy a gemstone from someone who is both an astrologer and a jeweller?

It is worth being careful. Both disciplines require years of dedicated study to master. When one person recommends a stone and sells it to you, it is reasonable to ask how they developed their expertise in each area.
