Cat’s Eye, or Lehsunia, is a variety of Chrysoberyl, a mineral composed of beryllium aluminium oxide (BeAl₂O₄). It displays a phenomenon called chatoyancy. This appears as a concentrated band of reflected light caused by dense parallel inclusions of rutile needles within the crystal.
When the stone is cut as a cabochon, these needle-like inclusions reflect light into a single sharp moving stripe, creating the well-known “cat’s eye” effect.
The stone often appears pale, translucent, and slightly waxy, similar to a clove of garlic held to light. In Sanskrit, it is called Vaidurya. The finest stones come from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), with additional sources in Brazil and India.
